The Pond Inlet RCMP, in partnership with Nunavut Emergency Management (NEM), the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary, Baffinland Iron Mines and local search and rescue volunteers, will resume the search for Rico Akpaleapik, starting August 9, 2025.

Residents of Pond Inlet can expect to see an increased police presence, search and rescue volunteers, and possible low flying helicopters in the area during the search.

Akpaleapik was last seen in Pond Inlet, on October 2, 2024. An extensive search that time involved additional RCMP officers, an RCMP police dog, NEM, aerial drones, community volunteers on foot and ATV, and air searches.  Despite these efforts, no traces of Akpaleapik were found and the search was suspended on October 29, 2024.

The Pond Inlet RCMP continue to investigate this as a missing person file.
