Pond Inlet man charged in relation to “Shelter-in-Place” alert

On May 20, 2026, at approximately 6:00 a.m, the Nunavut RCMP issued a “Shelter-in-Place” advisory for residents of Pond Inlet, Nunavut. The decision to publish the alert came after police were notified that a resident in the 500 block threaten to kill a female with a firearm.
Police established a safe perimeter and remained on scene until the Nunavut RCMP Containment Team arrived from Iqaluit. At 1:10 p.m, the male surrendered to police and was arrested without incident.
On May 21, the Pond Inlet RCMP charged Caleb Ootoova (age 74) with:
- Uttering threats to cause death, contrary to Section 264.1(1) C.C.
- Resist arrest, contrary to Section 129(a) C.C.
Ootoova was taken before a Justice of the Peace and was subsequently remanded into custody. His next bail hearing is scheduled for May 22, in Pond Inlet, Nunavut.
