Grade 3/4 Students from Victor Sammurtok School in Chesterfield Inlet are Recipients of the National RCMP "Name the Foal" Contest

Students in the Grade 3/4 class at Victor Sammurtok School have earned national recognition after being selected as one of the nine chosen across the country in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Musical Ride's annual "Name the Foal" Contest.

Earlier this year, children from across Canada were invited to submit names for one of the RCMP's newest foals. The Grade 3/4 class from Chesterfield Inlet submitted the name "Canada," which was chosen for one of the foals recently born at the RCMP breeding farm in Ontario.

To celebrate the accomplishment, Cpl. Jason Emmons visited the Victor Sammurtok School this week to present students and their teacher, Eda Martinovic, with the awards provided by the RCMP Musical Ride.

The class received a commemorative horseshoe inscribed "RCMP GRC CANADA," a photograph of the foal they named, and a certificate signed by RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme. In addition, each student received an RCMP commemorative pin recognizing their achievement.

For more than 80 years, the RCMP has bred its own horses and is internationally recognized for producing some of the finest Hanoverian horses in Canada. The iconic RCMP horse and rider remain among Canada's most recognizable symbols, representing the organization at public events and ceremonies around the world.

Each year, children across the country participate in the RCMP Musical Ride's "Name the Foal" Contest by submitting names that begin with a designated letter. The foals may one day join the famous Musical Ride if they meet strict requirements related to size, colour, rideability, and temperament.

In addition to performing in the Musical Ride, RCMP horses participate in public events, parades, royal escorts, and other special ceremonies throughout Canada and internationally.

The Nunavut RCMP congratulate the students of Victor Sammurtok School and thank them for their participation in this uniquely Canadian tradition.
