Fentanyl and handgun seized after Hay River RCMP arrest three during traffic stop

Three people were taken into custody during a traffic stop that lead to a drug seizure in Hay River last week.

On September 11th at approximately 3:00 p.m. police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by an unlicensed driver. Two passengers in the vehicle were found to have outstanding warrants for their arrest while a third was found to be violating probation conditions prohibiting him from being in the Northwest Territories.

All three were arrested. Subsequent searches located a 9mm handgun and approximately 7.9 grams of suspected fentanyl.

26-year-old Yahya Jibril Mohammed of Alberta and 28-year-old Trixie Freund of Hay River have both been charged with:

• Possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition, contrary to section 95(1) of the Criminal Code
• Possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, contrary to section 94(1) of the Criminal Code
• Unauthorized possession of a firearm, contrary to section 91(1) of the Criminal Code
• Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, contrary to section 88(1) of the Criminal Code
• Carrying a concealed weapon, contrary to section 90(1) of the Criminal Code
• Possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition without a licence, contrary to section 95(1) of the Criminal Code

Mohammed faces additional charges of:

• Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
• Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
• (2 counts) Failure to comply with a probation order, contrary to section 733.1(1)
• Failure to comply with a release order, contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the Criminal Code

Freund has further been charged with possession of a controlled substance, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

Both appeared before a Justice of the Peace and were remanded into custody.
The third individual, arrested on his outstanding warrant for an unrelated matter, was released to appear in court at a later date.

The 32-year-old driver of the vehicle received a summary offence ticket for operating a vehicle without a licence, contrary to section 66(1) of the Motor Vehicle Act
