Police in Behchokǫ̀ have charged one individual after a collision near the community that resulted in the death of a person.
On September 21st at approximately 11:45 p.m. officers received a call of a person sitting on the road near the community landfill. Officers attended the location and discovered a vehicle in the ditch. A seriously injured person and a deceased person were located outside the vehicle. Both were determined to have been passengers in the vehicle.
Emergency medical services were immediately requested, as well as support from G Division Police Dog Services to locate the driver. First aid was provided to the injured passenger until paramedics arrived. The passenger was later medivac’d out of the Territory for further treatment due to the severity of the injuries.
Shortly after 1:00 a.m. on September 22nd, Police Dog Services located and detained the suspected driver. She was transported to hospital in police custody for treatment of her own injuries.
The NT Coroner’s service was engaged and a collision reconstructionist attended, resulting in a temporary partial closure of the roadway while the scene was held for investigation.
33-year-old Leona Apples has been charged with:
• Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, contrary to section 320.13(3) of the Criminal Code
• Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, contrary to section 320.13(2) of the Criminal Code
• Failure to stop after an accident resulting in death, contrary to section 320.16(3) of the Criminal Code
• Failure to stop after an accident resulting in bodily harm, contrary to section 320.16(2) of the Criminal Code
She appeared in court and was remanded into custody.
The investigation remains open at this time.
