Islanders are being warned about a phone scam where fraudsters are impersonating police officers and falsely claiming that an individual’s Social Insurance Number (SIN) has been compromised. These scammers then pressure victims to move their money under the guise of protecting it.

Using caller ID spoofing, fraudsters make it appear as though the call is coming from a legitimate Prince Edward Island police phone number. However, PEI RCMP want to remind the public:

Police will never ask you for money or request that you move your money.

Caller ID can be faked. Do not rely on it to verify a caller’s identity.

Be cautious with all incoming calls—assume they could be a scam.

What to Do If You Receive a Suspicious Call

Take a Break: Pause and collect your thoughts. It is okay to hang up. Do not feel pressured to act. Never provide personal or financial information over the phone

Verify the Caller: If unsure, contact your local police service directly using a number you know and trust.

Inform Your Loved Ones: Protect your family and friends by discussing fraud awareness and sharing this warning.

If you are the victim of a scam call your local police detachment.
