PEI RCMP lay attempted murder, assault charges against Ontario man

PEI RCMP have laid multiple charges against an Ontario man, including attempted murder and multiple assault charges. 

Around 1:00 a.m. on Friday, April 24, 2026 Summerside Police were called by a security guard at Slemon Park who, while performing their duties, was assaulted by the man. Island EMS and Summerside Police initially responded to the call, and RCMP were also dispatched as the area where the incident occurred in Slemon Park falls within PEI RCMP jurisdiction. 

In apprehending the suspect, three Summerside Police officers were assaulted by the man who was combative with the officers. The security guard was treated for serious injuries at the scene by Island EMS and then transported to Prince County Hospital. They are currently in stable condition and have been able to assist police thanks to their actions during the incident and information provided. 

A 40-year-old man from Peterborough, Ontario faces six charges including:

• attempted murder – Sec 239(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada
• dangerous operation of a vehicle – Sec 320.13(2), Sec 320.2(a)
• assault with a weapon – Sec 267(a)
• three charges of assaulting a police officer – Sec 270(1)(a), Sec 270(2)(a)  

The man is being held at Prince County Jail pending a court appearance.

PEI RCMP Major Crime Unit is leading this investigation with assistance from RCMP Forensic Identification Services, RCMP General Investigation Section, and an RCMP Collision Analyst. Summerside Police continue to support the investigation. The Joint Forces Operations team has aided the investigation as well, which includes members of Summerside Police Services, Kensington Police Services and PEI RCMP. This investigation remains ongoing.
