“Tool markings and GPS trackable tools were key factors in solving these crimes,” said Cpl. Gavin Moore, PEI RCMP Media Relations Officer. “We encourage the public to mark tools with paint, engravings, or other identifiers. Tools with built in or added GPS connectivity allow owners to register the tools and have access to their GPS location. In this case, markings and GPS tracking were crucial in linking recovered tools to multiple offences.”

Best practices to combat tool theft:

  • Mark tools (paint, engraving, serial numbers)
  • Photograph tools and record serials
  • Store tools securely
  • Consider tracking for high‑value items
