The Prince Edward Island RCMP Major Crime Unit is providing an update on a longstanding unidentified human remains investigation dating back nearly three decades.
On June 7, 1997, the remains of a deceased man were discovered in Malpeque Bay by a local fisherman. Despite investigative efforts at the time, the individual could not be identified and was subsequently buried as “John Doe” at the Peoples Cemetery in Charlottetown. RCMP shared information publicly on this investigation multiple times in hopes of receiving tips from the public.
The recent identification was made possible through the use of familial DNA, and the family of the deceased has been informed of this match.
“This development highlights DNA as a powerful tool in modern policing,” said Cpl Gavin Moore, Media Relations Officer for the PEI RCMP. “Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased at this time.” There is no criminality suspected in this case.
The PEI Coroner’s Office, Quebec Coroner’s Office and the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), all played important roles in resolving this investigation.
At this time, the RCMP will not be releasing the identity of the deceased out of respect for the individual’s family.
