RCMP investigate in-custody death

RCMP are investigating an in-custody death of a prisoner in their 50’s from a provincial corrections facility. There is no evidence of foul play at this time.

On July 16, at approximately 5:15 a.m., PEI RCMP responded to a report of a deceased prisoner at a provincial correctional facility. The individual, who was serving a sentence at the time, was discovered unresponsive during routine inmate checks. Emergency medical assistance was sought; however, the individual was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Whenever a death occurs involving a prisoner in a correctional facility, police conduct an investigation on behalf of the Office of the Coroner. At this time, there are no indications of foul play. RCMP continue to work closely with the Coroner's Office as the investigation progresses.
