Bystanders rescue swimmer at Lakeside Beach

A swimmer in distress was rescued by three bystanders at Lakeshore Beach in West St. Peter’s.   

On August 5, 2026, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Kings District RCMP responded to a 911 call for a swimmer in distress in the water off Lakeside Beach. Island EMS and Morrell Fire Department were also dispatched to the call. When officers arrived on scene, all individuals involved were on the shore and the distressed swimmer was being assessed by Island EMS and Morrell Fire personnel. 

The swimmer was out with two other friends when they realized they were quite far offshore. While trying to help the swimmer, the two other individuals called out to those on shore for assistance. That’s when a third person entered the water, with a paddle board, and swam out to the distressed swimmer. All three were then able to get the person to shore.

This is a wonderful example of people looking out for each other, and coming to help each other in times of need. The swimmers in the water did the right thing calling out for help, and thanks to the third individual grabbing the paddle board, this incident had a very positive outcome.
