The RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) responded to assist with an incident in western PEI of an individual armed and barricaded in a residence.

Just after 8: 30 p.m. on Friday, August 7, 2026, a Prince District RCMP member reported an individual had pointed what was believed to be a handgun at the member; the man then barricaded himself in his residence with another woman also inside.

An RCMP Crisis Negotiation Team was called in and despite several hours and repeated requests for the individuals to exit the residence, they refused. Prince District RCMP obtained an entry warrant, and the RCMP ERT team was then called in.

ERT officers deployed tear gas into the residence and the two individuals surrendered to police without further incident. A 53-year-old Summerside man was arrested and is facing multiple charges including:

  • Pointing a firearm - contrary to Section 87(1) and Section 87(2)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace - contrary to Section 88(1) and Section 88(2)(a)

He will appear in court later today. The woman was charged with obstructing a police officer and later released. Given the location of the residence, there was no broader danger to the public during this incident.

PEI RCMP Police Dog Services, RCMP General Investigation Services and the RCMP Forensic Investigation Section are also supporting this investigation, which remains ongoing. The RCMP ERT team that serves PEI is a specially trained and equipped unit that deals with many of the most dangerous and dynamic incidents that police respond to. This team is available to partner and assist with all PEI police in emergency situations.
