PEI RCMP Warn About Gift Card Scam Involving Taxis

PEI RCMP have received reports over the past four months of fraudsters sending taxis to the homes of scam victims.

In these cases, victims who had already provided gift card information to scammers were targeted again. Fraudsters arranged for taxis to pick up the victims and take them to purchase additional gift cards in an attempt to continue the scam.

At this time, police are not aware of any victims who got into the taxis or purchased additional gift cards as a result of these incidents.

Being the victim of a fraud can be embarrassing, but it is important to know that you are not alone. Anyone can become a target of a scam. PEI RCMP encourage residents to be vigilant and remember these fraud prevention tips:

• Be cautious of anyone who requests payment through unusual methods, such as gift cards.
• Fraudsters often try to create a sense of urgency or make you feel nervous and anxious. Take a moment to stop, breathe, and think through the situation. Ask yourself: Could this be a scam?
• If you do not recognize a phone number, you do not have to answer. Let the call go to voicemail and return the call later if necessary.
• If you believe you have been the victim of a fraud, contact your local police and report the incident.
