Weekend Fire at Westwood Primary School in Cornwall

Queens District RCMP are investigating a suspicious fire that occurred Sunday night at Westwood Primary School in Cornwall, causing extensive damage to a new mobile classroom.

On September 20, 2026, at 10:47 p.m., members of the North River Fire Department and Queens District RCMP were dispatched to a report of a fire involving a new mobile classroom under construction at Westwood Primary School. The classroom sustained extensive damage.

The Provincial Fire Marshal attended the scene and determined the fire to be suspicious in nature. There were no injuries, and the fire was contained to the mobile classroom.

The investigation is ongoing. RCMP are asking anyone who may have information about the incident to contact Queens District RCMP. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

"An elementary school is at the heart of a community, and schools should be places where children feel safe to learn and grow," says Cpl. Gavin Moore, PEI RCMP Media Relations Officer. "A suspicious fire at a school property affects not only the physical structure but also the confidence and sense of security of students, staff and residents. We are committed to determining what happened and holding those responsible accountable."
