East Prince RCMP were called to North Bedeque for the second time this week yesterday as a potato harvester picked up another suspected mortar from a field in Slemon Park.
On October 27, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. East Prince RCMP responded to the first incident where what appears to be a mortar was collected in a potato harvester and discovered in unloading that load of potatoes. The Department of National Defence was engaged, and they collected the mortar later that day.
On October 28, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. Prince District was called back to the same farm as a second apparent mortar was picked up in a potato harvester. The Department of National Defence was contacted once again to deal with the ordnance.
Both ordnances were collected from a field that used to be part of the Military Base in Slemon Park. The base was decommissioned in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. This field has been in farm use for many years since the decommissioning and was rented this year by the farmer who uncovered the two ordnances. Going forward any additional concerns in connection to this field will have to be addressed by the property owner in concert with the Department of National Defence.
If you encounter anything that appears to be an explosive do not touch it, move a safe distance away and call the police.
