On November 2, 2026, at approximately 3:40 p.m., Kings District RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Routes 4 and 5 in Cardigan. A driver attempted to flee the scene but was arrested for impaired driving by alcohol.
Police learned that a Department of Fisheries and Oceans officer on duty, happened to be at the scene, intervened and arrested the driver.
Two children under the age of eight who were travelling in the arrested driver's vehicle were transported to hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.
Early indications in the investigation appear to show that the arrested driver's vehicle was being operated in a dangerous manner and failed to stop at a stop sign before colliding with another vehicle occupied by a lone driver.
The impaired driving investigation remains ongoing.
Island EMS and the Cardigan Fire Department also attended the scene.
"There is never an excuse for getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. This incident involved a dangerous driving behaviour, a collision, and an attempt to leave the scene, all while two young children were in the vehicle. The PEI RCMP remains committed to removing impaired drivers from our roads and thank the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Officer for their quick response to this scene," says Cpl. Gavin Moore the Media Relations Officer for the PEI RCMP.
