FURTHER UPDATE: Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes investigating homicide on Shoal Lake Cree Nation
After further investigation and consultation with Public Prosecutions, Karrena Young is now charged with second-degree murder, Section 235(1), Criminal Code. The previously laid manslaughter charge will be withdrawn at her next court appearance. That appearance is scheduled to take place in Melfort Provincial Court on June 26, 2025, via video.

As a result of continued investigation, 23-year-old Karrena Young from Pakwaw Lake, Saskatchewan (Shoal Lake Cree Nation) has been charged with one count, manslaughter, Section 236(b), Criminal Code. She is scheduled to appear in Melfort Provincial Court today (May 26, 2025) via video.
Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes continue to investigate.

Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes investigating homicide on Shoal Lake Cree Nation

On May 23, 2025, at approximately 7 p.m., Carrot River RCMP received a report that a child under the age of 10 had been seriously injured at a residence on Shoal Lake Cree Nation.
Officers responded immediately and located an unresponsive child inside the residence. Life-saving measures were attempted. EMS also attended and declared the child deceased at the scene.
The death was determined to be suspicious and Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes took carriage of the investigation.
A suspect has been identified and taken into custody.
The suspect and the child were known to each other. Investigation has determined there to be no elevated risk to public safety in relation to this incident.
