Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes: male charged with first-degree murder

On May 31, 2025 at approximately 2:00 a.m., Cut Knife RCMP received a report of a serious assault in a field off of Highway #40, east of Cut Knife, SK.
Officers responded immediately and located an injured male, who was later pronounced deceased by EMS at the scene. He has been identified as 52-year-old Garnet Whitecalf from Sweetgrass First Nation. His family has been notified and victim services made available to them.
An adult male was arrested at the scene.
Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes took carriage of the investigation.
As a result of continued investigation, 41-year-old John Whitecalf from Sweetgrass First Nation is charged with one count, first-degree murder, Section 235(1), Criminal Code.
John Whitecalf appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court on June 2, 2025.
