UPDATE: Saskatchewan RCMP’s Homicide Investigation Unit investigating suspicious death

As a result of continued investigation, Saskatchewan RCMP’s Homicide Investigation Unit have arrested and charged two adult males in relation to the death of 33-year-old Horace Bear.
26-year-old Eugene Caisse and 25-year-old Britain Volk are each charged with one count, second-degree murder, Section 235(1), Criminal Code (Information #90460584 and #90460583).
Saskatchewan RCMP’s Homicide Investigation Unit have also laid charges related to the altercation that resulted in multiple inmates being injured.
Eugene Caisse was additionally charged with one count, aggravated assault, Section 268, Criminal Code (Information #90460584).
26-year-old Steven Smokeyday and 26-year-old Lauder Bear are each charged with one count, aggravated assault, Section 268, Criminal Code (Information #90460586 and 90460585).
Court dates for the males have not been confirmed yet.

Background
On April 21, 2026, Saskatchewan RCMP received a report of a deceased male and multiple injured individuals at Saskatchewan Penitentiary. Correctional Service Canada has issued a media release about the incident, which can be found here.
The male’s death is considered suspicious. As a result, the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Homicide Investigation Unit has taken carriage of the investigation.
