Man charged with manslaughter, failure to comply after weekend homicide in Melfort

Saskatchewan RCMP’s Saskatoon Homicide Investigation Unit has charged an adult male following a weekend altercation that resulted in the death of a second adult male.
On May 2, 2026, around 12:00 p.m. Melfort RCMP received a report of an assault with a weapon at an apartment on the 100 block of Broadway Avenue South in Melfort.
Initial investigation has determined an altercation occurred between two adult men in the apartment. During the altercation, one of the men stabbed the other. The injured male was transported to the hospital by EMS, where he later died.
As a result of continued investigation by Saskatchewan RCMP’s Saskatoon Homicide Investigation Unit, 43-year-old Tom Cook of Melfort, SK is charged with one count, manslaughter, Section 236(a) of the Criminal Code and three counts, failure to comply with a release order, Section 145(5)(a) of the Criminal Code in relation to the death of 36-year-old Sam Stonestand of Melfort.
Cook was scheduled to appear in Melfort Provincial Court on May 4 at 9:30 a.m.
