Battlefords RCMP: Adult male charged following an assault involving a youth

A man is charged with multiple offences after a teenager was reported missing in North Battleford.

On April 25, 2026, at 6:00 pm, Battlefords RCMP received a report of a missing female teenager. Initial investigation led officers to a motel room in North Battleford, where an adult male was located. Officers searched the motel room and located the missing teenager in a locked bathroom with injuries described as serious. 

As a result of continued investigation, 22-year-old Deland (Nipin) Okanee from Turtleford, SK is charged with:

• One count, sexual assault, Section 271, Criminal Code;
• One count, abduction of person under 16, Section 280(1), Criminal Code;
• One count, sexual interference, Section 151, Criminal Code;
• Two counts, forcible confinement, Section 279(2), Criminal Code;
• One count, assault, Section 266, Criminal Code;
• One count, obstructing justice, Section 139(1), Criminal Code, and
• One count, uttering threats, Section 264.1(1)(a), Criminal Code.

He will appear in North Battleford Provincial Court on May 22, 2026. (Information #90599896)
