Saskatchewan RCMP’s Saskatoon Serious Crimes Unit (SCU) have charged a woman following the death of a child on Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation, SK.
On May 10, 2026, Rosthern RCMP responded to a report of a child in medical distress at a residence on Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation. EMS attended and declared the child, who was under the age of 12, deceased at the scene.
Further investigation and consultation with the Saskatchewan Coroners Service determined the child’s death was suspicious in nature. Saskatchewan RCMP’s Saskatoon SCU took carriage of the investigation.
Saskatchewan RCMP officers arrested a 67-year-old female on Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation on June 10, 2026. She is charged with:
- one count, manslaughter, Section 236, Criminal Code;
- one count, criminal negligence causing death, Section 220, Criminal Code;
- one count, failure to provide necessaries of life, Section 215(2)(a), Criminal Code; and
- one count, abandoning a child, Section 218, Criminal Code.
We are not releasing the name of the child or accused in the event a publication ban is ordered, and to protect the identity of the child. We will not be providing additional information that may lead to the identification of the child.
The 67-year-old female made her first appearance in Saskatoon Provincial Court on June 11, 2026. She is scheduled to make her next appearance in court in Rosthern on June 17, 2026.
Saskatchewan RCMP’s Homicide Investigation Team, Saskatoon Warrant Enforcement and Suppression Team, and Prince Albert and Battlefords Serious Crimes Units assisted with this investigation.
