UPDATE: One adult arrested after Melville RCMP officers injured in shooting

Saskatchewan RCMP’s Serious Crimes Unit has continued to investigate the shooting in Melville that injured two RCMP officers.

Investigation determined an altercation occurred between two individuals. An adult male threatened and assaulted the other individual. The other individual did not report physical injuries to police.

Officers responded to this incident and were injured upon arriving at the residence. 

Investigators have since recovered a firearm at the residence.

As a result of continued investigation, Markus Dodge, a 55-year-old from Melville, SK is charged with: 

  • two counts, attempted murder, Section 239(1)(a.1), Criminal Code;
  • two counts, aggravated assault, Section 268, Criminal Code;
  • two counts, discharge firearm with intent, Section 244(1), Criminal Code;
  • two counts, pointing a firearm, Section 87(1), Criminal Code; and 
  • one count, unlawful possession of a firearm.

In relation to the initial altercation, he is also charged with one count, uttering threats, Section 264.1, Criminal Code, and one count, assault with a weapon, Section 267, Criminal Code.

Markus Dodge is scheduled to appear in Yorkton Provincial Court on June 23 at 9:30 a.m. (Information # 90570052 and 90570053). 

The injured officers remain in hospital. They are in stable condition; however, their injuries are serious and potentially life-altering in nature. We appreciate the support that has been expressed for them, and know that many are interested in more details about them and the nature of their injuries. We want to be mindful of their privacy during this difficult time.

Background

On June 21, 2026, at approximately 9:35 p.m., Melville RCMP areceived a report of an assault at a residence in Melville on 8th Avenue West. 

As officers arrived at the scene, a firearm was discharged, and two Melville RCMP officers were struck. Both officers were transported to hospital by EMS with injuries described as serious in nature. 

The armed individual – believed to be an adult male – remained in the residence.

Officers from Melville Detachment and Saskatchewan RCMP’s Critical Incident Response Team responded immediately. This includes the Emergency Response Team, Police Dog Services and the Crisis Negotiation Team. Officers with the Serious Crimes Unit were also engaged. 

The Government of Saskatchewan’s Protection and Response Team assisted, along with Regina Police Service’s SWAT officers.

Saskatchewan RCMP carefully monitored this situation, which included continual assessment as to whether a dangerous person alert was required. Ultimately, an alert was not issued as the suspect was contained to a residence and officers determined there was no elevated risk to public safety. 

At approximately 2:00 a.m., the suspect and another occupant exited the residence. The suspect was arrested and remains in custody. The other occupant was initially detained but released shortly after. The second occupant has since been cleared of any involvement. 

Saskatchewan RCMP’s Serious Crimes Unit (SCU) has carriage of this ongoing investigation. Charges have not been laid. As such, we are unable to provide any additional information about the individuals arrested at this time.

Investigators do not believe there is any further elevated risk to public safety associated with this incident.
