UPDATE: Melfort RCMP investigating shooting

As a result of continued investigation, on July 8, Melfort RCMP obtained and executed a search warrant at a residence on 1 Avenue South in Melfort, SK.
During the search, officers located and seized a loaded crossbow, ammunition, a firearm, 75 grams of cocaine, and drug trafficking paraphernalia. A male and two females were arrested at the residence.
While Melfort RCMP were at the residence, a male arrived in a vehicle. Officers approached the vehicle and observed firearms inside. The male was arrested and officers seized two loaded firearms from inside the vehicle.
Resulting from further investigation, 23-year-old Gabriel Carballea from Melfort is charged with:
- one count, possession of a weapon obtained by crime, Section 96(1), Criminal Code;
- two counts, possession of firearm/weapon/device/ammunition in motor vehicle, Section 94(1), Criminal Code;
- two counts, careless use of a firearm, Section 86(1), Criminal Code;
- two counts, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, Section 88(1), Criminal Code;
- two counts, unauthorized possession of a firearm, Section 91(1), Criminal Code;
- one count, possession of property obtained by crime under $5000, Section 354(1)(a), Criminal Code; and
- one count, possession for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine, Section 5(2), Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
53-year-old Jesus Carballea from Melfort is charged with:
- one count, unauthorized possession of a firearm, Section 91(1), Criminal Code;
- one count, unsafe storage of firearms, Section 86(2), Criminal Code;
- one count, possession of property obtained by crime under $5000, Section 354(1)(a), Criminal Code; and
- one count, possession for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine, Section 5(2), Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
The two females who were arrested were later released from police custody without charge.
Gabriel Carballea and Jesus Carballea are scheduled to appear in Melfort Provincial Court on August 31, 2026 (Information #9057829).

Background
On July 7, 2026 at approximately 12:20 a.m., Melfort RCMP received a report of a shooting on 1 Avenue South in Melfort, SK.
Investigation determined an altercation occurred between a group of individuals. During the altercation, a firearm was discharged and two adult males were injured. Both males were taken to hospital; one with serious injuries and one with non-life-threatening injuries.
Melfort RCMP continue to investigate.
