Saskatchewan RCMP concerned about recent fatal collisions in Saskatchewan

From July 10 to 21, 2026, Saskatchewan RCMP officers responded to 12 fatal motor vehicle collisions, that resulted in the deaths of 17 people on Saskatchewan roads. Half of these fatal collisions involved alcohol and/or drugs as a contributing factor.
These collisions were located in various Saskatchewan RCMP detachment areas: North Battleford (2 fatalities), Spiritwood (2 fatalities), Kamsack (1 fatality), Prince Albert (1 fatality), Nipawin (1 fatality), Outlook (2 fatalities), Lumsden (2 fatalities), Rosthern (1 fatality), Maple Creek (3 fatalities), Swift Current Rural/Morse (1 fatality), Beauval (1 fatality).
Earlier today, we held a virtual media availability featuring Inspector Lee Knelsen, Operations Officer of Saskatchewan RCMP Traffic Services. Here is the message he delivered:
“Saskatchewan RCMP officers have been responding to an increasing number of fatal collisions. We’d like to share our concerns with the public by making these numbers known.
This summer so far – from June 1 to July 22 – Saskatchewan RCMP officers responded to 23 fatal collisions that resulted in the deaths of 27 people. Since July 10 alone, 16 people have lost their lives.
Compared to the same period last year, this is a 77% increase in fatal collisions and a 108% increase in the number of lives lost, with 13 collisions and 13 lives lost.
The month of July is not over yet and we have already surpassed last year’s numbers.
We’re also seeing more fatal collisions involving alcohol or drug impairment.
During the first six months of 2025, 35% of fatal collisions were investigated as involving alcohol and/or drugs as a contributing factor.
During the same period in 2026, 52% of fatal collisions are investigated as involving alcohol and/or drug as a contributing factor.
To be clear, these are not just numbers. They represent lives lost, and these numbers are increasing. We urge everyone to make safe decisions every time they get behind the wheel.
In Saskatchewan, the same four factors contribute to fatal collisions on our roads: seatbelts, speed, impairment and distracted driving.
Please, put your seatbelt on, respect speed limits, don’t take drugs and/or alcohol when you know you have to drive, and pay attention to your surrounding at all times. It can save your life, and someone else’s life.
