Southend RCMP: male charged after firearm discharge on Tate Island

Southend RCMP charged a male for uttering threats and discharging a firearm on Tate Island.

On July 19, 2026 at approximately 12:15 p.m., Southend RCMP received a report of a firearm discharge on Tate Island, which is located approximately 100 kilometres north of Southend on Reindeer Lake. 

Investigation determined a group of individuals were on Tate Island. One of them, a male, uttered threats to harm the other individuals, and discharged a firearm. No one was physically injured as a result of the firearm discharge.

With the assistance of the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency, two RCMP officers were transported by helicopter to Tate Island. Officers located and arrested the male suspect.

As a result of investigation, 49-year-old Travis Bird from Southend, SK is charged with:

• one count, discharge firearm with intent, Section 244, Criminal Code;
• one count, possession of a firearm when knowing possession unauthorized, Section 92(1), Criminal Code;
• one count, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, Section 88(1), Criminal Code;
• one count, assault with a weapon, Section 267(a), Criminal Code; and
• one count, uttering threats against a person, Section 264.1(1)(a), Criminal Code.
