Coronach RCMP seized 43 firearms and 25 kilograms of explosive material at a residence in Kayville, SK.
On July 26, 2026 at approximately 3:00 p.m., Coronach RCMP received a report of a firearms-related incident in Kayville, SK.
Investigation determined that an individual was walking outside when a male at a property across the road pointed a firearm in their direction. The firearm was not discharged. The individual left the area. No physical injuries were reported to police.
Coronach RCMP continued to investigate.
On August 19, 2026, Coronach RCMP, with the assistance of Saskatchewan RCMP’s Critical Incident Response Team, arrested an adult male in Avonlea, SK. They then executed a search warrant at a residence in Kayville. During a search of the residence, officers located and seized approximately 25 kilograms of explosive material, 43 firearms, multiple prohibited firearm magazines, and ammunition.
As a result of investigation, 37-year-old Matthew Dorland from Kayville is charged with:
- three counts, unsafe storage of firearms, Section 86(2), Criminal Code;
- one count, tampering with serial number of firearm, Section 108(1), Criminal Code;
- one count, possession of a prohibited weapon when knowing possession unauthorized, Section 92(2), Criminal Code;
- one count, pointing a firearm, Section 87, Criminal Code; and
- one count, unlawfully possess unsecured high hazard explosives, Section 22(1), Explosives Act of Canada.
Matthew Dorland has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Moose Jaw Provincial Court on August 20, 2026.
Gravelbourg and Assiniboia RCMP, Saskatchewan RCMP’s Explosive Disposal Unit, and conservation officers with the Provincial Protective Services Branch assisted in this investigation.
There was an increased police presence in the Kayville and Avonlea areas on August 19 in relation to this investigation. There is no longer an increased police presence, and no known risk to the public at this time.
