Saskatoon RCMP CTSS and partners remove 40 dangerous drivers from roads over long weekend

Saskatoon RCMP CTSS and 14 partners checked 1,509 vehicles and removed 40 drivers from Saskatchewan roads for alcohol or drug consumption during the Labour Day long weekend.

Between September 4 and September 7, 2026, Saskatoon RCMP Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan (CTSS) organized and participated in several multi-agency traffic safety operations around the Saskatoon area. 

Policing partners from 14 agencies joined Saskatoon RCMP CTSS operations to promote safe driving behaviours and removing impaired drivers from Saskatchewan roads. 

They conducted roving patrols and check stops on Highway 16 at the Langham Scale; on roads near Pike Lake Provincial Park; on roads near Lumsden; on highways leading to Regina before the Labour Day Classic; and on Highway 11 near Hague.

Different partners participated in the operations on different days. They included: Lanigan RCMP CTSS; Maidstone RCMP CTSS; North Battleford RCMP CTSS; Rosetown RCMP CTSS; Saskatchewan RCMP CTSS Motorcycle Unit; Saskatoon RCMP CTSS; Yorkton RCMP CTSS; Corman Park Police Service; Dalmeny Police Service; Saskatchewan conservation officers with the Provincial Protective Services Branch; Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI); Saskatchewan Highway Patrol officers with the Provincial Protective Services Branch; Saskatoon Police Service CTSS; and Vanscoy RM Police Service.

During the four days, officers checked a total of 1,509 vehicles and tested a total of 1,268 drivers for alcohol and/or drug impairment.

As a result of these checks and tests, police officers:

• issued 348 warnings and 245 tickets;
• suspended 25 drivers for consuming drugs prior to driving and impounded their vehicles;
• suspended 13 drivers for consuming alcohol prior to driving and impounded their vehicles;
• issued 12 inspection notices for vehicle safety infractions;
• issued 3 inspection notices to commercial vehicles for vehicle safety infractions;
• charged 2 drivers with Criminal Code offenses for driving while being impaired by alcohol and impounded their vehicles;
• located 1 individual wanted on warrant; and
• suspended 1 driver for travelling 174 km/h in an 80 km/h zone near Rosetown.

“These results show that impaired driving remains a serious concern on Saskatchewan roads. Through these collaborative operations, officers removed 40 drivers who had consumed alcohol or drugs before getting behind the wheel. Every impaired driver taken off the road helps prevent potential tragedies. We will continue working with our partners to promote safe driving and help keep our roads safe,” said Inspector Lee Knelsen, Operations Officer of the Saskatchewan RCMP Traffic Services.
