Saskatchewan RCMP orchestrated a four-day proactive initiative aimed at suppressing crime and improving safety in the Battlefords area from September 9 to 12.
“We had about 40 specialized officers in the Battlefords area, in addition to the frontline police officers that work to keep the community safe every day,” says S/Sgt. Kory Davidsen from Saskatchewan RCMP’s Saskatchewan Enforcement Response Team (SERT). “Everyone worked together on our priorities: checking offenders on conditions, arresting people on warrants and suppressing criminal activity.”
Saskatchewan RCMP units involved in the initiative include Traffic Services, the Roving Traffic Unit, the North Battleford and Lloydminster Crime Reduction Teams, the Saskatoon Warrant Enforcement and Suppression Team, Police Dog Services, and the Battlefords Detachment. The Saskatchewan Marshals Service also assisted. Saskatchewan RCMP Air Services provided overwatch support for all involved police officers from the air. Civilian SERT criminal analysts worked to drive data-informed approaches for the teams on the ground.
Here are some of the results of the initiative:
- Saskatchewan RCMP arrested four wanted individuals, including a male wanted for aggravated assault, a male wanted for offences including sexual assault and a male wanted for failing to abide by conditions as he awaited court on firearms-related charges. The Saskatchewan Marshals Service also arrested two individuals, one wanted for property crime offences and the other for impaired driving.
- Saskatchewan RCMP also arrested a different adult male for failing to comply with court-ordered released conditions in place as he awaits court on firearms-related charges.
- Saskatchewan RCMP conducted more than 200 traffic stops, which resulted in three individuals receiving roadside suspensions for consuming alcohol or cannabis before driving, 27 tickets, 25 warnings, and two notices to have vehicles inspected for safety. They also charged one person under the Criminal Code for driving while impaired.
- As a result of investigation, Saskatchewan RCMP inspected a business on St. Laurent Drive under the Excise Act, and seized more than 200 cigarettes and five bags of loose tobacco they determined to be unstamped and illegal. One adult male was charged with one count of being unlawfully in possession of tobacco under the Criminal Code and one count of possessing unstamped tobacco under the Excise Act.
- Saskatchewan RCMP also investigated and gathered evidence for a number of ongoing files.
“As Saskatchewan’s provincial police service, we have the unique ability to surge specialized police services into a community – and this initiative showed how effective that can be. We found and arrested wanted people, took illegal goods off the streets and made great progress on a number of ongoing investigations,” says S/Sgt. Davidsen. “I appreciate the dedication and collaboration of all the Saskatchewan RCMP officers involved, and the assistance of the Saskatchewan Marshals Service.”
“Policing can’t just be reactive,” says Insp. Ryan How, officer in charge of the Battlefords Detachment. “We also have to be proactive – with initiatives like these – to help prevent crime and ultimately, keep our communities safe.”
