Wadena/Foam Lake RCMP investigating fatal collision

On October 2, 2026, around 12:35 p.m., Wadena/Foam Lake RCMP received a report of a collision on a grid road approximately nine kilometres west of Foam Lake.
Officers responded, along with fire, EMS and STARS.
Investigation determined a truck was attempting to pass a semi, and collided with an SUV.
Three occupants of the SUV – the driver and two passengers – were declared deceased by EMS at the scene. They have been identified as a 40-year-old woman, an 8-year-old girl and a 5-year-old girl, all from Foam Lake. A third passenger of the SUV, an adult male, was taken to hospital by STARS with injuries described as serious in nature.
The driver of the truck was taken to the hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening in nature. There were two passengers in the truck. Both were taken to the hospital, one by EMS with injuries described as non-life-threatening in nature and one by STARS with injuries described as serious in nature.
The semi was not damaged and the driver did not report any physical injuries to police.
As a result of investigation, 40-year-old Kelly Knopf from Sumter, South Carolina was arrested and charged with:
- three counts, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, Section 320.13(3), Criminal Code; and
- three counts, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, Section 320.13(2), Criminal Code.
He is scheduled to appear in Yorkton Provincial Court on October 5, 2026.
Wadena/Foam Lake RCMP continue to investigate with the assistance of a Saskatchewan RCMP collision reconstructionist.
