The first related coroner’s inquest

The Saskatchewan Coroners Service (SCS) held a public inquest in January of 2024 in relation to the 11 deaths that occurred at James Smith Cree Nation and in Weldon, Saskatchewan on September 4, 2022.

The SCS is responsible for the investigation of all sudden, unexpected deaths. The purpose of an inquest is to establish who died, when and where that person died, and the medical cause and manner of death.

As a result of this public inquest, the coroner’s jury made recommendations to prevent similar deaths in the future. The Saskatchewan RCMP has responded to these recommendations.
