Whitehorse RCMP is advising local businesses to be vigilant following an increase in reports of phishing scams involving fraudulent requests to change payment details for invoices.

In these scams, fraudsters impersonate legitimate service providers and send emails requesting that businesses update banking information or payment destinations for outstanding invoices. These emails often appear authentic, using company logos and professional language, making them difficult to detect.

RCMP recommends the following precautions for businesses:

  • Verify all requests for changes to payment information by contacting your service provider directly using a trusted phone number or trusted email address.
  • Do not rely solely on email communication when confirming financial details.
  • Review email addresses carefully for subtle changes or misspellings.
  • Report suspicious emails to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and your local RCMP detachment.

If you believe you have been targeted or have sent funds to a fraudulent account, contact your local RCMP detachment at 867-XXX-5555.

For more information on fraud prevention, visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
