Yukon RCMP is reminding residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution around rivers, lakes, and other waterways as changing conditions continue to create unpredictable and potentially dangerous situations.

In recent weeks, Yukon RCMP have been involved in several search and rescue incidents across the territory.

“We are hearing from people this season that historically calm rivers have been impacted by high water levels and changing river channels," says Constable Paul Miller, a  search and rescue manager for Yukon RCMP. "Some Yukon rivers are experiencing fast-moving water, debris, and rapidly changing conditions that can create significant hazards. We urge residents and visitors to prepare for the unexpected, carefully assess conditions before heading out, and take every available precaution. No outing is worth taking unnecessary risks."

Yukon RCMP encourages the public to take precautions when spending time on or near the water. Anyone planning outdoor or backcountry activities, particularly in remote areas, should ensure they have the skills, knowledge, equipment, and emergency plans needed to safely manage the conditions and risks they may encounter.

Information on outdoor safety, trip planning, emergency preparedness, and safe boating practices is available through organizations such as AdventureSmart and Transport Canada

Search and rescue incidents place significant demands on emergency responders and can put both the public and rescuers at risk. Careful planning and preparedness can help prevent emergencies and ensure everyone returns home safely.

Yukon RCMP thanks all partner agencies, volunteers, and search and rescue personnel who continue to respond when Yukoners and visitors need assistance.
