Whitehorse RCMP has received recent reports of Yukoners receiving fraudulent letters and is warning the public to be vigilant.

The letters appear to be from a law firm and advise they represent an individual with the same last name as the recipient who died without a will and left behind a multi-million-dollar estate. The letters go on to suggest that, with the lawyer’s help, they can claim a portion of the estate, which would then be shared between them. Recipients are instructed to contact the lawyer by email.

Whitehorse RCMP reminds the public to be cautious of unsolicited communications promising money, inheritances, or financial opportunities.

“If something seems too good to be true, it probably is,” says Constable Greg Hornblower, Whitehorse RCMP. “Fraudsters often use professional-looking letters, emails, and other communications to make their scams appear legitimate. We encourage Yukoners to slow down, verify information through independent sources, and never provide personal or financial information in response to unsolicited requests.”

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre provides detailed information on scams affecting Canadians, including those targeting Yukon residents. If you suspect you’ve been targeted or victimized by a scam, report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. If you have lost money or provided personal information, also contact your local police.
