Fatal collision on the Alaska Highway

Whitehorse RCMP is investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred on the Alaska Highway on August 18, 2026. 

At approximately 3:02 pm, Whitehorse Detachment received a report of a head on motor vehicle collision on the Alaska Highway between the Crestview subdivision and Cousins Airfield Road. 

Two vehicles were involved in the collision, one of the driver’s was pronounced deceased at the scene. The other driver was transported for medical treatment.

 Whitehorse Fire Department, Yukon Emergency Medical Services and Yukon Highways and Public Works attended the scene. The highway was closed to traffic following the collision and reopened to one lane at approximately 4:30 pm. A collision reconstructionist attended to examine the scene. The road fully reopened at 10:00 pm. 

The Yukon RCMP extend condolences to all those impacted by this incident.

The investigation is ongoing and police are seeking additional witnesses. The vehicles involved were a black 2024 Chevrolet Equinox and a maroon 2000 GMC Jimmy. Investigators are particularly interested is speaking with an individual who was at the scene prior to police arrival and departed before officers were able to obtain their information.  This person is believed to have spoken with another witness at the scene and may have information relevant to the investigation.
