Joint News Release – Yukon RCMP and Carcross/Tagish First Nation - Joint initiative targets road safety in Carcross

Carcross/Tagish First Nation and Carcross RCMP have partnered in an initiative to improve road safety in the community.

A realistic cut-out of an RCMP vehicle was installed on the side of the South Klondike Highway just north of the community earlier this month. The Carcross/Tagish First Nation Executive Council proposed the idea during discussions with Carcross RCMP officers on ways to address community concerns regarding speeding.

The cut-out was positioned strategically where the speed limits on the highway reduces from 90 to 70 to 50km/hr approaching the community. That area is also used frequently by pedestrians. The cut-out is an additional tool for ongoing local traffic safety enforcement by the Carcross RCMP. This project builds on the past success of an RCMP cut-out on the Alaska Highway in Teslin.

“The cut-out has had overwhelming positive support from the community and has gathered attention from across Canada thanks to social media posts,” said Acting Detachment Commander Cst. Lindsay Bawn.

“We have had people say it definitely made them slow down as they thought it was real.”

Bawn said she has previously ticketed motorists exceeding the 50km/hr speed limit by up to 45km in that area.

“This is the kind of community-led approach that happens when people share ideas, even off-the-wall ones, and then work together to bring them to life. The car cut-out started as a suggestion in our Executive Council, which was eventually implemented by our local RCMP detachment. It speaks to a strengthening relationship between our community and the RCMP and an understanding that we all live in this community together, we all look out for each other’s children, and we all want to make Carcross a safer place to live,” said Darla-Jean Lindstrom, Deputy Ḵaa Shaadé Hení, Carcross/Tagish First Nation.
