Haines Junction RCMP charge driver for speeding twice in same day

A Whitehorse driver is facing multiple charges after speeding 100 kilometers over the posted speed limit twice in the same day on the Alaska Highway.

On August 24, at approximately 12:30 p.m. a Haines Junction RCMP officer was conducting patrols on the Alaska Highway and attempted to stop a car traveling over 190km/hr in a 90km/hr zone.  The driver fled from police at a high rate of speed and was not pursued due to the risk to public safety.

Later that day at approximately 4:42 pm. a different Haines Junction RCMP officer also conducting patrols on the Alaska Highway stopped a motorcycle traveling at 198km/hr in a posted 90km/hr zone. During the course of the investigation, Haines Junction RCMP determined that the driver of the motorcycle was also the driver of the speeding car from earlier that day.

As a result of the investigation, the two vehicles have been impounded and a 20-year-old male, has been charged with:

Two counts of Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle; and

Flight from police.

“Although there were no injuries or collisions in these instances, speeds this high could have resulted in more severe circumstances for the driver as well as other motorists. Drivers should obey posted traffic speed limits for everyone’s safety,” said Haines Junction Detachment Commander Sgt. Brendan Fast.

Yukon RCMP officers proactively patrol roadways across the territory looking for speeders, impaired drivers, checking for seatbelt usage and ensuring vehicles and drivers are operating within the law and with the appropriate documentation. Motorists are reminded to slow down, drive safe and sober and ensure that their licence, registration and insurance are up to date.
