The Whitehorse General Investigations Section (GIS) has arrested and charged an individual in connection with a series of incidents targeting the Whitehorse Mosque.

On August 13, 2026, the Yukon Muslim Society, the non- profit organization that operates the Whitehorse Mosque, reported that the doors of the Mosque had been smeared with feces over night and that offensive remarks had been painted on the property.

Between August 21 and September 10, 2026, additional incidents were reported involving spray paint on the building, a parked vehicle and on the back of another building.

Following an investigation, GIS investigators identified and arrested a suspect on September 11, 2026. The individual was held in custody for a court appearance on September 14 at 1 pm, he was subsequently released with conditions.

The accused has been charged with six counts of mischief relating to a building primarily used for religious worship, contrary to section 430(4.1) of the Criminal Code, with each offence alleged to have been motivated by hatred, contrary to section 320.1001(1) of the Criminal Code.

As the matter is now before the courts, no further details will be provided.

“The RCMP recognizes the impact these incidents can have on individuals, families, and the wider community. Reports of this nature are investigated thoroughly, and investigators assess all available evidence to determine the appropriate charges. Anyone who experiences or witnesses criminal activity, including incidents believed to be motivated by hate, is encouraged to report the matter to police.” -  Corporal Nancy Gagnon, Supervisor, Whitehorse General Investigation Section.
