Cochrane, AB - In early October of 2025, Cochrane RCMP responded to a suspected overdose death in the Mînî Thnî area of Stoney Nakoda Nations. Cochrane RCMP’s Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) initiated an investigation into the potential source of the drugs involved. Through the course of the investigation, a suspected drug trafficker was identified. The suspect resided in Calgary. Cochrane RCMP coordinated with the Calgary Police Service Drug Unit to advance the investigation.

On Oct. 29, 2025, Cochrane CRU, along with the CPS Gang Suppression Team (GST), arrested a 58-year-old resident of Calgary. They have been charged with the following offences under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act:

  • Trafficking a Controlled Substance, contrary to Section 5(1); and
  • Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking a Controlled Substance, contrary to Section 5(2).

During the arrest, police seized approximately 69.5 grams of fentanyl and methamphetamine.

Individual was held for a Judicial Interim Release Hearing and is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Calgary on Nov. 5, 2025.

Investigators could not confirm the origin of the controlled substances that contributed to the suspected overdose death; however, this investigation underscores the serious risks associated with the illegal drug trade in our communities and the commitment of police to hold drug traffickers accountable.

“This arrest highlights the strength and effectiveness of our partnerships with the Calgary Police Service and other law enforcement agencies across Alberta.” Said Insp. Dave Brunner, Officer in Charge of Cochrane RCMP. “The rapid assistance and expertise provided by the CPS Drug Unit played an integral role in this investigation and we are grateful for their continued support.”

Cochrane RCMP would like to thank Calgary Police Service for their collaboration during this investigation.
