Off-duty RCMP officer charged after investigation

Correction: The court date is Jan. 7, 2026 and the member was released on a release order after a hearing as opposed to an undertaking. The Alberta RCMP sincerely regret these factual errors.

Brooks, Alta. – On Nov. 20, 2025, Brooks RCMP began an investigation into the off-duty conduct of an RCMP officer.

Following an investigation, Cpl .Michael Hagel (40), of the Brooks RCMP, has been charged with:

• Assault
• Assault by choking

Cpl. Hagel, who has been a member of the RCMP for 9 years, was released on an undertaking with conditions to attend Alberta Court of Justice in Brooks on Jan. 7, 2026. He is currently suspended from duty with pay.

As this matter is now before the courts, the Alberta RCMP is unable to provide further information.
