Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit investigates homicide near Slave Lake

Slave Lake, Alta. – On Jan. 23, 2026, Slave Lake RCMP received a report of a deceased person near Highway 2, East of Slave Lake. RCMP attended and confirmed the deceased’s identity as 39-year-old. The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit was deployed and took carriage of the investigation. 

As a result of the investigation, police were able to identify a suspect and immediately implement plans in order to locate and arrest them. On Jan. 26, 2026, the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit, with assistance from the Alberta Sheriffs and the Edmonton Police Services Tactical Team, located and arrested 27-year-old in Edmonton.

The individual has been charged with second degree murder. They were brought before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody. They are to appear before the Alberta Court of Justice in High Prairie on Feb. 2, 2026.
