Wood Buffalo RCMP investigates off-highway vehicle collision, driver arrested

Fort McMurray, Alta. – On Mar. 11, 2026, at 8:32 pm, Wood Buffalo RCMP along with Regional Emergency Services, responded to a collision involving an off-highway vehicle (OHV) and a pedestrian on a winter trail, located southeast of Fort McMurray approximately 6kms north of the entrance to Gregoire Lake Provincial Park. Witnesses reported that an OHV had been stuck and then backed up over a pedestrian. The victim suffered severe injuries and was transported by ambulance to an Edmonton area hospital. The driver of the OHV, a 46-year-old male resident of Fort McMurray, was arrested at the scene without incident.
The individual, who cannot be named until an Information is sworn, is facing charges:
- Impaired operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm;
- Impaired operation of a conveyance while over 80mg%; and
- Criminal negligence causing bodily harm.
The individual was released from Police custody on an Appearance Notice. They are set to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on Apr. 15, 2026.
Wood Buffalo RCMP continue the investigation with assistance from Wood Buffalo Municipal Traffic Services. RCMP are reminding everyone to enjoy their recreational activities responsibly and safely by not driving impaired. Do not get behind the wheel if you have been drinking or consumed drugs:
Never get behind the wheel when impaired. It is criminal and dangerous.
Arrange a sober ride to and from your destination if you plan on drinking or consuming drugs.
Do not operate off-highway or recreational vehicles while impaired, as well as boats and other heavy machinery.
Community members can do their part to prevent impaired driving by following these safety tips. If you witness or suspect an impaired driver, please call 911.
