Red Deer RCMP charge individual after altercation involving weapons

Red Deer, Alta. – Red Deer RCMP have charged an individual after an altercation involving weapons. 

On March 2, 2026, at 11:42 p.m., Red Deer RCMP responded to a 911 call reporting an individual had attacked several people with weapons, in the area of 50 St. and 50 Ave. in Red Deer, Alta. 

When police arrived, witnesses advised that the suspect had struck three individuals on their heads and backs with a cane and threatened another person with a knife before fleeing the area on foot. The victims sustained minor injuries and declined medical assistance. 

Police quickly located the suspect who then waved the knife towards police. The individual was taken into custody without incident. 

As a result of the police investigation, a 61-year-old, resident of Red Deer, has been charged with the following: 

  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose (x2);
  • Assault with a weapon (x4); and
  • Resisting or obstructing peace officer.

The individual was held for a Judicial Interim Release (JIR) Hearing and was remanded into custody. They are scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer on March 4, 2026.
