Railroad tracks

Maskwacis, Alta. – The Maskwacis RCMP is reminding the public to use caution when operating off-highway vehicles (OHVs) near railway tracks, particularly during spring conditions when ground surfaces can be soft and unstable.

Warmer temperatures and melting snow can create muddy terrain, increasing the risk of vehicles becoming stuck. When OHVs or other vehicles are operated too close to railway tracks, they can become immobilized and create serious safety hazards.

Railway tracks and surrounding areas are not designed for recreational vehicle use. Trains require significant time and distance to stop and cannot quickly respond to unexpected obstacles on or near the tracks. Any obstruction can pose a risk to public safety and may also disrupt rail operations.

Maskwacis RCMP encourages all OHV users to:

  • Avoid travelling on or near railway tracks and rail corridors
  • Be aware of changing ground conditions that can lead to vehicles becoming stuck
  • Plan routes in safe, designated areas away from rail infrastructure
  • Never attempt to cross tracks except at designated crossings

The public is reminded that railway property is restricted and trespassing can result in enforcement action. More importantly, staying clear of rail lines helps protect both individuals and critical transportation infrastructure.
