Bowden, Alta. – In July of 2025, Innisfail RCMP were notified by Correctional Service Canada Bowden Institution regarding breach of trust allegations against a Correctional Officer. The Correctional Officer immediately resigned from Correctional Service Canada upon learning about the investigation. Investigation determined that the Correctional Officer had developed a romantic relationship with a serving inmate and they were smuggling contraband into the institution for the inmate to sell at inflated prices. The known contraband was nicotine patches and a cellphone. Banking records demonstrated that the Correctional Officer received thousands of dollars in payment for their role in smuggling contraband into the institution. On April 15, 2026, the former Correctional Officer was arrested.
A 46-year-old resident of Olds Alta., is charged with breach of trust by a public official.
The individual was brought before a Justice of the Peace and was released from custody to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer on May 1, 2026.
The Innisfail RCMP thanks Correctional Service Canada for their quick action in discovering and reporting a compromised employee and for their assistance with this investigation.
