Edmonton – Alberta RCMP are cautioning travellers, due to heavy snowfall and winds continuing today and into tomorrow, that traffic on Highway 63 will be closed this evening.

Currently, the road closures and following detours will apply for tonight:

  • Highway 63: Northbound traffic will be blocked by Alberta Sheriffs at Wandering River.
  • Highway 63: Southbound traffic will be blocked by Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Bylaw officers at the junction of Highway 881.
  • Highway 881: Northbound and Southbound travel remains blocked north of Imperial Mills by Lac La Biche RCMP.

Snowplows, tow trucks, and Wood Buffalo RCMP will continue working together throughout the weekend in order to assist the stranded motorists and remove vehicles in order to re-open the highways. The local HERO Foundation assisted with their emergency helicopter services to complete a fly over to provide an estimated number of stranded motorists. Wood Buffalo RCMP have been advised that approximately 300 vehicles are stranded along Highway 63 in various locations. Snowdrifts across the highway are 2 to 3 feet, so the snow removal process is taking longer than normal.

If you are experiencing an emergency, dial 9-1-1 to request assistance.
