Strathcona County, Alta. - On April 30, 2026, at approximately 11:58 a.m., Strathcona County RCMP responded to a report of three youths in a business in the Emerald Hills area carrying what was believed to be firearms. The youths were then reported to have been driving around in a vehicle pointing the firearms out the window.

Police immediately responded, located the vehicle and determined the firearms to be water guns that appeared real. The youths were engaging in the water gun game often referred to as the “Senior Assassin” or “Senior Splashin” game.

As the end of the school year approaches, we are asking those who are choosing to participate in the water gun game to stay safe, respectful, and follow the rules. While the game is meant to be fun and a way to celebrate the end of the school year, it should not create safety concerns, fear in the community, or lead to misunderstandings that require police involvement.

Strathcona County RCMP are reminding participants to be mindful of how their actions may be perceived by others. In particular, the use of toy or replica weapons in public spaces can cause alarm. In some cases, these items closely resemble real firearms if they are altered or painted to look more realistic. This may prompt emergency calls from concerned members of the public and a significant police response.

Participants are reminded to avoid playing in or around schools, roadways, businesses, and private properties without permission. Respecting personal boundaries, traffic safety, and community spaces is essential. Interactions that may seem harmless among participants can be misinterpreted by others who are unaware of the game.

“We strongly encourage parents and guardians to be aware of their child’s participation and to have conversations about safe and respectful play,” says Constable Cheri-Lee Smith, Strathcona County RCMP Public Information Officer. “Let’s work together to ensure everyone remains safe, respectful and enjoyable in our community.”
