The Alberta RCMP is marking Emergency Preparedness Week, a national awareness initiative running May 3-9, 2026, aimed at encouraging community members to ensure preparation for yourself, your family, and your community during an emergency. This year’s theme is “Be Prepared. Know Your Risks.” By understanding the risks in your area, you can learn which actions to take to protect yourself and your household in the event of floods, wildfires, severe storms, power outages, and more.

Be prepared to face a range of emergencies by taking a few simple steps:

  • Know the risks. Knowing the specific types of disasters that pose a risk to your community and region can help you better prepare.
  • Make a plan. A plan outlining how to evacuate, who to contact, and how to proceed during an emergency can be essential for you and your family’s safety.
  • Get or create an emergency kit. Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours. Think about food, water, medications, important documents, etc.

Just as community members prepare for emergencies, so does the Alberta RCMP

The Alberta RCMP’s Operational Readiness and Response Unit is equipped to respond to any emergency through business continuity planning, the Division Emergency Operations Centre (DEOC), emergency operational plans, and search and rescue. During an emergency, the Alberta RCMP is prepared to protect Albertans and ensure minimal or no interruption to critical services. Planning and logistics are already in place for Alberta’s wildfire season, with DEOC engaged and ready to support decision-making and support at all levels for a rapid response to any emergency.

The Alberta RCMP will be sharing emergency preparedness information throughout the week. Check out Canada.ca and follow our Facebook @RCMPinAlberta and X @RCMPAlberta.
