May 12-18, 2026, marks Canada Road Safety Week, a seven-day national campaign, made in partnership with the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, aimed at making Canada’s roads the safest in the world. The Alberta RCMP will be promoting safe driving behaviours during the week as well as conducting targeted enforcement to remove impaired drivers from Alberta roadways during Victoria Day long weekend and National Impaired Driving Prevention Enforcement Day on May 16, 2026.

Under the theme “Road Safety—Every Road. Every Day. Everyone,” the Alberta RCMP encourages following the below tips to help stay safe on the roads:

  •      Don’t drive impaired: Driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol impairs your judgment and reaction time. Impaired driving is criminal and dangerous.
  •      Don’t drive fatigued: Getting behind the wheel when tired limits your ability to pay attention to the road and slows your reaction times.
  •      Don’t drive distracted: Texting, calling, or handling devices while driving can result in motor vehicle collisions. Preset your handsfree device, GPS, radio, or music and do not adjust unless your vehicle is pulled over and safely stopped.
  •      Drive responsibly: Don’t drive aggressively or take unnecessary risks. Drive the speed limit and follow the rules of the road.
  •      Buckle up: Ensure all vehicle occupants are properly restrained using seat belts or child car seats.

“While education is a key part of Canada Road Safety Week, it goes hand in hand with increased enforcement, which we will be carrying out over the long weekend,” says Sgt. Darrin Turnbull, Alberta RCMP Traffic. “We want to ensure motorists are practicing safe, impairment-free driving to make our roads safer for everyone.”

The Alberta RCMP is proud to participate in this year’s Canada Road Safety Week campaign. While this public safety initiative is part of a national effort to help advance Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2035 and Beyond to make Canada’s roads the safest in the world, our efforts aim to make the roads here in Alberta among the safest in Canada.

Together, let’s strive for safer travels, ensuring that every journey ends with a safe arrival on every road, every day, for everyone.
