Strathcona County RCMP urges drivers to practice defensive driving as traffic volumes increase

Strathcona County, Alta. -  As seasonal weather conditions improve, traffic volumes across Alberta roadways are steadily increasing. Strathcona County RCMP are encouraging motorists to adjust their driving habits to current road conditions by slowing down, planning trips in advance and allowing extra time for delays caused by congestion. 

With more vehicles on the road, drivers are reminded that defensive driving principles remain essential to keeping everyone safe. Rushing increases the risk of collisions, injuries, and preventable incidents. 

Maintaining proper spacing between vehicles is a key element of defensive driving. Drivers should increase their following distance by at least two vehicle lengths to allow sufficient reaction time, especially in heavier traffic. This additional space can significantly reduce the likelihood of rear‑end collisions. 

Drivers are also reminded to always stay aware of their surroundings, know where other vehicles are, anticipate possible hazards, and be prepared to respond safely. 

Defensive driving helps avoid collisions, injuries, vehicle damage, towing costs, insurance claims, and, most importantly, the loss of life.
